Bariatric Surgery
Bariatric surgery is a process, not just a procedure. The process assists those above their most comfortable weight to lose weight. Sunshine Coast Dietetics has been involved with bariatric surgery on the Sunshine Coast for over 10 years. Over this time we have collected a wealth of knowledge we can share with you. Every bariatric procedure has significant nutritional implications, and for that reason, seeing a dietitian is an important step to ensure the success of the entire weight loss process prior and post-surgery. We offer a all-inclusive bariatric packages which includes all products, vitamins, resources and consults needed pre and post surgery – contact us to day to find out more.
Examples:
Gastric Sleeve: A significant portion -3/4 of the stomach is removed to create tube like stomach which only holds initially 1/3 of a cup and then as time passes can increase to 1/2 cup of food at any time.
Lap banding: Adjustable gastric banding or “Lap Banding” involves surgical (usually laproscopic) placement of an adjustable band around the top portion of the stomach. The band is a tool that provides you a window of opportunity to modify your food choices and behaviours and develop healthy new habits that will maintain your weight loss.
Your dietitian is aware of some of the nutritional implications of bariatric surgeries include the ability or inability to sufficient fuel your body with the necessary nutrients to achieve your health and weight loss goals, the speed of which you can eat, the types of food you can eat, food behaviours, and liquid vs. solid meals. During your consultation with the dietitian they will teach you how to make great food choices, ensure you are taking enough protein and nutrients, and also teach you how to change habits that have been contributing to your weight for many years. Daily multivitamins and calcium are essential-we will discuss these with you and you may need other vitamins or minerals (depending upon your blood tests). Your dietitian has the knowledge and experience to support you in achieving your short and long term weight goals. We guarantee your dietitian will make your life easier and put you on the path to success!
We offer a special all-inclusive Bariatric Package for clients undergoing surgery as well as specific bariatric resources to assist. Contact us today and ask about our packages.

Pregnancy and Fertility
Fertility can be affected by medical and physical factors and now there is good evidence that diet also has a significant role to play in fertility. In 2007, Research by Harvard Medical School, (Nurse’s health study) reported in The Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, that women who adopted five diet and lifestyle measures were able to improve their fertility by 69% compared with women who adopted none. Research also shows that the quality of your diet during pregnancy can affect the growing baby’s future health, long after they leave the womb. Furthermore, approximately 74% of women are gaining more weight than is scientifically recommended which can cause long-term health implications.
Examples of diet and lifestyle changes which have been shown to assist with fertility includes but is not limited to achieving and maintaining a healthy weight, consuming a low GI (glycaemic index) diet, ensuring your diet meets you iron and calcium requirements and consuming a higher ratio of good fats (polyunsaturated and monounsaturated). All of these have been shown to assist in improving fertility.
Our team knows exactly what your requirements are and what you need to improve your fertility and increase your chances of a successful pregnancy. Contact us today, we would love to assist you in your pregnancy journey.

IBS and FODMAPs
Irritable Bowel Syndrome is a condition that affects a large percentage of the population-1 in 7 Australians are affected by IBS. The symptoms can be worrying and debilitating and may include abdominal pain, bloating, and wind as well as diarrhoea and or constipation all these symptoms cause discomfort as well as stress and anxiety (which actually can make symptoms worse!).
The diagnosis should be made by your GP so as to exclude any other possible cause for your symptoms, such as Coeliac Disease or Irritable Bowel Disease (Crohn’s or Colitis). Management may include use of medication (your GP will discuss options with you), but it is now known that dietary modification often assists in resolution of most symptoms. Your dietitian at Sunshine Coast Dietetics is trained in these interventions.
Monash University has developed a Low FODMAP diet. This diet limits foods that contain poorly digested carbohydrates (not all carbs!). The bacteria that live in the small intestine ferment these poorly digested carbohydrates and gas, wind and distension with associated pain is often the result.
Sunshine Coast Dietetics’ specialist dietitian team has undertaken intensive training in the Low FODMAP diet and can support you through each phase of the diet to achieve the best results long-term. Our expertise can’t be duplicated by Google, don’t try and do it alone! Clients often say they have never felt so fantastic, with such a relief of symptoms after undertaking our Low FODMAP program. Contact us today and we will match you with an experienced dietitian to help you achieve your goals.

Weight Management
Have you found it hard to stick to “diets”? Found it easy to lose weight initially but can never keep it off? Confused about which approach is best to lose weight? Or are you the opposite, do you struggle to put on weight and keep it on? Whichever end of the spectrum you sit are you sick of trying and failing? Look no further, here at Sunshine Coast Dietetics we guarantee you results, that is right – guarantee. There is no “one size fits all” approach at SCD. We individualise our approach, and ensure we develop a goal and strategy that best fits your lifestyle.
We don’t just focus on the food you eat either, we also discuss food behaviours in depth – which is often the greatest source of problems. Let’s face it, most of us know how to eat healthy, but why don’t we? We will provide you with the necessary tools and behaviours to achieve your goals long-term, without thinking it’s a chore, or eating “like a rabbit”.
Just some of the weight management styles our dietitians have undertaken additional training in are the “Non-Diet Approach”, “Health at Every Size”, traditional weight management as well as malnutrition (and frailty) management.

There is more to sports nutrition than most know. It is an art. Our dietitians have trained hard, and honed their artistic skills. They can help you master nutrition for your chosen event. Sunshine Coast Dietetics have a dietitian to suit your specific needs, contact us today to be matched to your experienced dietitian.
