Sweat Testing: Why?
We all sweat different amounts and with different electrolyte (sodium) concentrations. While you may have an idea that you are a heavy sweater (e.g. you always come back drenched from a one hour run or exercise session) assessing your individual sweat profile can help to personalise advice on hydration and electrolyte replacement.
It is widely acknowledged that a decrease in body weight due to fluid loss (usually ~2%, though individual differences exist) may result in a decrease in performance. While we never expect to maintain a stable weight, we can manage dehydration if we understand your individual sweat rate under different conditions (temperature, exercise intensity etc.). Though this is only part of the story.
By analysing the electrolyte concentration (sodium) of your sweat during exercise, we can get a better idea of your electrolyte requirements. The idea of determining a salty sweater by the salt stains on their exercise gear is not a valid method for accessing electrolyte losses. Salt stains are exacerbated by evaporation and will be more apparent on darker clothing. By using sweat patches we can obtain samples of your sweat and send them off to The Sweat Lab for analysis. Giving a scientifically valid indication of your electrolyte losses.
